Our mission

Founded to serve Virginia's land, water, and people

Computer Recycling of Virginia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organization established in 2001 with the dual-purpose mission of reducing electronic waste and increasing computer availability for educational use.

CRVA was founded in 2001 as the only electronics recycler based in Virginia while the need for responsible electronics disposal was growing rapidly. New yearly rollouts of 'next-gen' tech and the persistent need to upgrade began generating millions of tons of "last year's" electronics destined for the local landfill.

At the same time, school systems in the early 2000's were struggling to keep up with the technology boom. Those that embraced the change were faced with learning and navigating a then-new concept: data security.

CRVA answered the call.

Our program

A new way to connect our community

We developed a community electronics program unlike anything that had existed before; one capable of providing both critically-needed recycling solutions and lifechanging access to education to our own local community.

Our system of IT asset disposal and e-waste recycling highlights reuse while prioritizing data security and environmentally-sustainable disposal. All equipment is processed to completely sanitize 100% of previous data before being evaluated and designated for refurbishment or recycling. Material deemed unfit for reuse is handled according to approved recycling protocols for each class of material. Nothing is thrown away.

Our program builds a bridge which allows local businesses to directly support the next generation of Virginians, all while preventing a significant volume of highly-pollutant e-waste from entering Virginia landfills.

Our impact

Continuing to create meaningful change

To date, CRVA has collected and recycled over 50 million pounds of electronics that would have otherwise been thrown away in local VA landfills. We have refurbished and donated over 20,000 educationally-useful computers to more than 350 schools and nonprofits across Virginia.

Computers that have been refurbished and donated by CRVA are utilized every day in an impressive variety of impactful ways, from expanding the capabilities of community-based programs to providing underprivileged students in Virginia the opportunity to experience real U.S. military drone pilot training. Every computer that we refurbish and put into the hands of a student in Virginia opens an invaluable gateway to higher education and potentially lifechanging opportunities.

Our Values

Focusing our efforts here at home

Computer Recycling of Virginia is a multigenerational family-run charity based in Tappahannock, Virginia.

We are lifelong Virginians with the desire to give back and benefit our local community. We believe in helping our neighbors and going the extra mile to do things right. Those values carry over into our work and drive our daily efforts to keep Virginia beautiful.

The recycling and data security practices we championed are now standard practice for e-waste recyclers around the globe. Computer Recycling of Virginia pioneered electronics recycling for the entire east coast of the United States, and continues to lead the industry in effective environmental stewardship, secure data handling, and successful reuse efforts.
